Dayara Bugyal Trek in December: Snow Trail, Temperature & Guide

Ritesh Kumar Mishra

The Dayara Bugyal trek in December is a good choice if you want to walk through snow and see the winter Himalayas. But snow is not guaranteed on every date. Early December may have clear paths at lower levels, while later dates often offer a better chance of snow on the meadows.

Dayara Bugyal lies in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The usual Raithal route passes through forests and camps before reaching wide mountain meadows. Dayara Top stands at about 12,000 feet, though published altitude figures vary slightly. The walk is often rated easy to moderate in normal conditions, but snow and ice can make it harder. If snow is your main reason for going, do not book based only on the month. Ask the trek operator for a recent trail report and check whether the route is safe for your dates.

Dayara Bugyal Snow in December: Early vs Late Month

The chance of snow usually improves as winter moves forward, but each year is different. Snowfall depends on weather systems, past snowfall and the temperature at high levels. A warm spell can leave parts of the lower trail clear, even when the upper slopes have snow.

Time

What you may find

What to keep in mind

Early December

Clear lower paths, with snow possible higher up

Do not expect the whole meadow to be white

Mid-December

A better chance of snow on higher sections

Conditions can change after fresh snowfall

Late December

A stronger chance of wider snow cover

Nights are colder, and ice may make walking harder

These are seasonal patterns, not a snow forecast. If you want to see fresh snow, ask for a report from the last few days before your trek. If you mainly want mountain views and a winter walk, you may still enjoy the trek even when the snow cover is light.

Dayara Bugyal Temperature in December

December days can feel pleasant in the sun, but the cold grows sharper as you climb. At night, temperatures at higher camps may fall well below freezing. Wind and wet clothes can make you feel colder than the number on a weather app suggests.

The temperature is  around 8°C to 12°C during the day and -5°C to -10°C at night. Treat these as rough planning figures, not a forecast for your exact dates.

Gui camp

Freezing nights are possible

Chilapada camp

Colder nights, with frost or ice possible

The figures can vary with the weather and the exact camp. Carry enough warm layers for below-freezing nights, even if the day feels mild.

Dayara Bugyal Trek Route, Distance and Itinerary

The Raithal route is a common choice for a multi-day Dayara Bugyal trek. Uttarakhand Tourism lists a route of about 21 km, with stops at Gui and Chilapada before the walk across Dayara Bugyal. Some operators use different camps or change the plan in winter.

Here is one published route plan to help you understand the walk. The walking hours are estimates and can rise in snow.

The longest walking day is the stretch towards Dayara Top and onward. Snow can slow you down, so do not judge the effort by distance alone. Ask your operator how the winter itinerary changes if the group cannot safely cross the upper trail.

Where Do You Camp on the Dayara Bugyal Trek?

The camps are usually below the open meadows, with places such as Gui and Chilapada used on the Raithal route. The exact overnight stops depend on the operator and current conditions.

Do not assume that camping is allowed anywhere on the meadow. Published trek guidance notes restrictions on overnight camping on alpine meadows, so camps should follow the current local forest rules and use approved sites.

How Difficult Is Dayara Bugyal in December?

Dayara Bugyal is often rated easy to moderate in normal conditions. In December, snow and ice can raise the difficulty to moderate, especially for people who have never walked on snow. The route can take longer, and cold weather makes breaks less comfortable.

You do not need to be an expert trekker, but some basic fitness helps. Before your trip, practise brisk walking, stair climbing and leg exercises. Try to build up to an hour of steady walking without feeling worn out.

Winter also brings shorter daylight hours. Start early, stay with your group and follow the trek leader’s pace. Do not walk ahead alone to reach the meadow first.

What to Pack for Dayara Bugyal in December

The right gear helps you stay warm, dry and steady on snow. A good jacket alone is not enough if your hands, feet or inner layers get wet.

Pack these key items:

  • Thermal top and bottom, plus fleece or wool layers
  • Warm padded jacket and a windproof outer layer
  • Waterproof trekking shoes with good grip
  • Warm socks, gloves, woollen cap and neck cover
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for bright snow
  • Headlamp, personal medicines and a power bank
  • Waterproof bags for spare clothes and electronics

Ask whether the operator provides gaiters, trekking poles or microspikes. These may be useful on snow or ice, but they are not included in every package. Use the gear your trek leader recommends.

Winter Safety: Cold, Altitude and Short Days

Dayara Top is close to 12,000 feet, so the climb can feel harder than a walk in the hills. Take your time, drink water and tell your guide if you feel unwell. A bad headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual weakness should not be ignored. Your guide may need to stop the climb or take you to a lower level.

Cold injury is another risk. Numb fingers or toes, pale skin and loss of feeling need quick attention. Keep your hands and feet dry, add warm layers before you get very cold, and avoid long stops in strong wind.

Fresh snow can hide ice and make the trail hard to see. Poor visibility can also make it easy to lose the path. If the trek leader says the route is unsafe, turn back. Reaching Dayara Top is never worth taking a risk with your group.

How to Reach Raithal

Most trekkers travel from Dehradun to Raithal by road via Uttarkashi. The drive is about 185 km and can take around 8 to 9 hours, depending on traffic, road work and weather. Uttarakhand Tourism also lists Dehradun as the main rail and air link for this trek.

Try to reach Dehradun the day before your trek starts. Winter road delays can affect your arrival, so avoid a tight connection on the same morning. Withdraw cash in Uttarkashi, as ATMs and network access may be limited beyond the town. Download key maps and keep your operator’s contact details saved offline.

Dayara Bugyal Trek

How Much Does the Dayara Bugyal Trek Cost in December?

The price depends on the route, group size, transport and equipment. Published packages vary from budget options to more costly trips with transport and better stays included. One current cost guide lists packages around ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, while other operators charge different rates and may add GST or transport fees. Treat this as a guide only, not a fixed price.

Before you pay, check whether the price includes meals, tents, sleeping bags, local transfers, forest permits, a guide and snow gear. Also ask about refunds or date changes if heavy snow makes the route unsafe. The cheapest package may cost more in the end if key items are left out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dayara Bugyal open in December?

Winter treks may operate, but you should confirm the departure and route with a local operator. Snowfall or unsafe conditions can lead to changes or cancellations.

How many days are needed for the trek?

A Raithal itinerary may take about six days from Dehradun and back, including the road journey. Shorter routes and different operator plans are also available.

What age is allowed for Dayara Bugyal in December?

There is no single age rule for every operator. Ask about the minimum age, fitness needs and winter safety plan before booking a child or older family member.

Is Dayara Bugyal better than Kedarkantha for snow?

Both can offer a winter snow experience, but conditions vary each year. Dayara is known for its broad meadows, while Kedarkantha is known for its summit climb. Choose based on your fitness, the route and current snow reports.

Will there be deep snow in late December?

There is a better chance of wider snow cover later in the month, but deep snow is not guaranteed. Ask for recent photos or a dated trail report before you travel.

If you are planning a December trip, the best next step is to confirm the route, camp plan and latest snow report with your operator. A clear plan and the right gear matter more than a promise of deep snow.
