Tawang in January 2026: Weather, Snowfall & Travel Guide
Ritesh Kumar Mishra
January is the hardest month to visit Tawang, it is also the most rewarding if you plan it right. For travellers planning a trip in January 2026, here is what the conditions actually look like. You will face deep cold, slow roads, and uncertain plans and that is the trade.
You also get snow-covered monasteries, empty viewpoints, and silence most people never see and that is the upside. Know both sides before you decide.

Tawang in January — Weather and Temperature
January is Tawang’s coldest month. Tawang temperature in January ranges from about -10°C to -12°C at night and 2°C to 4°C during the day. Most of January sees 5–7 hours of daily sunlight. The nights are the real challenge. Days often start bright and clear. Blue skies are common after sunrise. By noon, sunlight feels strong despite the cold air. Snow reflects light hard, so afternoons feel warmer than expected.
The swing hits fast. A sunny 3°C afternoon can drop below -8°C by early evening. That shift decides your day. Step out late, return early, and layer up before sunset. Do not wait to feel cold. This is not a blizzard month every day. It is a cold-and-clear month with sharp nights.
Snowfall in Tawang — January Is Peak Month
Not all snow days in January work the same way. January is Tawang’s peak snowfall month, with snow falling most commonly at night and in early morning. That matters more than total snowfall numbers. Most days follow a pattern. Light snow overnight, cloudy early morning, then clearing skies by late morning. By midday, roads within town often open up. Outdoor plans fit into a narrow window. Aim for 11am to 2pm and that is your slot.
Heavy snowfall is different, it is less frequent but real that kind of storm can block roads and delay travel by a day or more.
Sela Pass in January — What Has Changed
Sela Pass is no longer the gatekeeper it used to be. Sela Pass in January sits at 4,170 metres, where wind chill can push temperatures near -20°C. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in March 2024 at about 3,000 metres, most vehicles now use the tunnel to reach Tawang. The pass is a stop, not a necessity, that change matters. Earlier, a closure at Sela Pass could block the entire route. Now, the tunnel stays open in most winter conditions. Travel is more reliable than older guides suggest.
Tourists still visit the pass for photos, for the frozen Sela Lake. In January, the lake often turns solid white. You can walk around the edges and the winds are sharp. Do you still drive over the pass to reach Tawang? No. You choose to go up for the view and that is the shift.

Should You Visit Tawang in January? An Honest Answer
January is not Tawang’s best month but is its most honest one. It works well for some people. It fails badly for others, photographers, couples, and people who want quiet will like it. Monasteries feel empty, views feel personal, snow adds a clean look to everything and it is a different town.It does not suit tight plans, families with young kids will find the cold harsh. First-time mountain travellers may struggle with altitude and temperature together. Anyone with a fixed return date takes a risk if roads slow down.
Is that a reason not to go? Not if your dates are flexible.
Go if:
- You want snow without crowds
- You like slow, quiet places
- You can add buffer days
- You are fine skipping Bum La if closed
Skip if:
- You need fixed travel dates
- You are travelling with small kids
- You want guaranteed Bum La access
- You dislike sub-zero nights
Places to Visit in Tawang in January
Start with the monastery, Tawang Monastery feels very different in January. Few tourists, Monks go about daily routines, prayer flags move against a white backdrop. It feels lived-in, not staged but the mornings are best, go before 10am.
Madhuri Lake changes completely in winter. The lake often freezes over, the surrounding forest goes quiet under snow. No boating, no crowds, just still air and sharp light. It is a short visit, but it stays with you.
Bum La sits on most plans. It does not always work. Even with permits, access can be denied on the day due to weather or army clearance. Hold it loosely, if it opens, go early. If not, move on.
Nuranang Falls runs thinner in winter but still worth a stop. Jaswant Garh War Memorial stays open year-round. Roads to these spots depend on recent snowfall. Ask locally each morning plans change fast and keep plans flexible.
Torgya Festival — The January Reason Most Guides Miss
Torgya is not a festival you will find in most Tawang guides. It is a three-day monastic festival held at Tawang Monastery in January. Dates follow the Tibetan calendar and shift each year. Monks perform cham dances, masked rituals meant to drive away negative forces for the coming year. This is not staged for tourists and there are no loud announcements. No fixed seating, you stand, watch, and try to understand what is happening. The masks, the drums, the slow movements and it takes time.If your dates align, it is a strong reason to visit in January. Check exact 2026 dates with local sources before planning.
How to Reach Tawang in January
The road to Tawang takes two days. From Guwahati, the standard route runs via Bhalukpong, Bomdila, and Dirang. Most people stop overnight in Dirang. It helps with altitude, it also breaks the long drive, day two runs through the Sela Tunnel and into Tawang.
The Sela Tunnel changed this route. You no longer depend on crossing the high pass in transit. You still visit it if weather allows. January roads can slow after fresh snow and that is normal. Hire an SUV or 4WD. This is not optional in winter, shared Sumos run from Tezpur early morning, but private vehicles give more control. Drive times stretch in snow and start early each day.
Route breakdown:
- Guwahati to Dirang: about 320 km, 10–12 hours
- Overnight halt in Dirang
- Dirang to Tawang via Sela Tunnel: about 140 km, 5–7 hours
Permits for Tawang in 2026 — ILP and Bum La
You need two permits, ILP for Tawang and a local permit for Bum La. In 2026, the Inner Line Permit is applied online at arunachalilp.com. Approval often comes within hours, though it can take longer. Carry a printout or digital copy, you will show it at Bhalukpong check-gate and beyond. Bum La requires a separate permit. This is arranged in Tawang through your driver or a local operator. Apply a day before your planned visit. Final approval depends on the army and weather. January approvals are less certain, keep both in mind.
Packing for Tawang in January
One heavy coat is not enough. The day-night swing demands layers. A thermal base, a fleece mid-layer, and a windproof outer shell work better than one thick jacket. You adjust through the day. You stay warm at night and that is the idea. Footwear matters more than most people expect. Snow turns slushy by afternoon and freezes again by evening. Regular shoes slip, insulated waterproof boots help, gloves and a cap are not optional and nights bite hard.
Carry these:
- Thermal inner wear
- Fleece jacket
- Windproof outer jacket
- Insulated waterproof boots
- Woollen socks (multiple pairs)
- Gloves and wool cap
- Sunglasses for snow glare
- Lip balm and moisturiser
- Power bank (cold drains batteries fast)
Conclusion
January in Tawang is not easy but it is clear. If you want snow, quiet monasteries, and fewer people, go. If you need fixed plans and smooth travel, skip it. Plan with buffer days. Pack for cold nights and keep Bum La flexible and that is the decision.
